OCTELA Awards

Each year the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (OCTELA) present several awards to nominated members. These awards recognize the special contributions made in teaching English language arts and in supporting the organization's goals.

OCTELA also promotes competitions sponsored by affiliate organizations, especially the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). These competitions are open to nominated students from preK through college and to adults involved in teaching and/or the organization. The competitions are designed to encourage reading and writing, whether creatively through story or poetry, or journalistically through publications like that in the NCTE Exceptional Student Literary Magazine award.

Additionally, links listed on the Resource Page of OCTELA's website inform visitors of other potential competitions that encourage and reward participants who are interested in all aspects of the English language arts.

Among the awards OCTELA promotes are:

Adults:

The Bonnie Chambers Award for Exemplary Beginning Teaching - Presented to a nominated teacher in grade K-6 who are in their second through fourth year of teaching.

Outstanding English Language Arts Educator - Presented to a nominated OCTELA member or building principal and selected by committee.

NCTE Awards - several categories of awards exist which recognize contributions in teaching, writing, leadership and support or the organization

Students:

NCTE Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines - intended as a means of recognition for students, teachers, and schools producing excellent literary magazines; as an inducement for improving the quality of such magazines; and as encouragement for all schools to develop literary magazines, seeking excellence in writing and school-wide participation in production.

NCTE Promising Young Writers - for eight graders - represents NCTE's commitment to early and continuing work in the development of writing. The program was established to stimulate and recognize student's writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among eight graders.

NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing - started to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best student writers in the nation, given to graduating high school seniors who are nominated and cited as excellent writers by judges.

Buckeye Book Award - The Buckeye Children's Book Award program is designed to encourage children in Ohio to read literature critically, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in children's literature programs, and to commend authors of such literature. Books read by students are then nominated for the award and voted on by individual students, classroom representatives or school representatives.
